There are a ton, but none repeat as much as, “Hey, how do you tie your tie like that?” Now I would be willing to bet there is no way you guessed that one. Ties seem like such an afterthought, but for guys it’s about the only thing we can control on the wedding day. Every wedding I shoot one of the groomsmen, the groom, a guest, or even the bride asks how I tie my tie. My favorite was earlier this summer when the bride asked if I would tie the grooms tie to make sure it looked liked mine. I know you’re thinking what’s the big deal, it’s a tie. If you’re a groom chances are your tie was picked to match the rest of the wedding colors. If you’re a groomsmen, let’s face it, you and your tie are an accessory to the bridesmaids. You know all the other details will be perfect. Your tie should be too.

I can thank my Dad for instilling in his boys the constant pursuit for the perfect knot. Thirty plus years of suits and ties and the man never settled for less than perfection. Three tips he gave us:

  1. The length
    1. The end of your tie should touch the middle of your belt. Yes you can have a giant knot and still have your tie the right length.
  2. The knot
    1. Consider the width of your collar when deciding on the knot size. Wide collars need a larger knot.
  3. The dimple
    1. Take your time. Make it look good. This is a little detail most overlook.

This was my first time shooting wedding pictures there but I knew it would instantly be a favorite spot. Even Tanja’s room provided great window light for her getting ready pictures. Thank you Tanja for putting up with me before the wedding. We used the main lobby, the upstairs, a hallway and even stopped in the bar for a few pictures before all the girls headed for the trolley.

We started at the Omni Hotel then Kate and Ryan had their first look of the day at the Peninsula Hotel. If you haven’t been to the bar in the Peninsula I suggest a visit. If you are looking for a unique spot for pictures in Chicago stop by the bar.

The Chicago tour continued with Michigan Ave and Olive Park for bridal party pictures before the ceremony at St. Josaphat Catholic Church. The reception was at one of my favorite reception venues in Chicago, the Chicago History Museum. The back are is perfect for cocktail hour and the main hall is a great space for a formal dinner.

As we all know, Chicago winters can be unpredictable at best. It could be 40 or -40 in the same weekend. Chicago hotels have plenty of normally unseen spots for wedding photography. All of these pictures were taken in the Chicago Embassy Suites. I find by mixing up the angles it’s easy to have all of your indoor wedding photography locations look completely different. These shots required me laying on the ground flat on my back, hanging over a 5th floor balcony, and riding up and down on an escalator. So, winter brides, there is no reason to worry about your wedding photography. Let your photographer find the great spots!
